Nancy Mouat created her first clay horse in a high school art class in rural southwest Iowa. Almost twenty years elapsed before she began sculpting again--working clay into horses, dogs, and busts of her children. After another twenty years, sculpting has become her primary interest. Her first bronze, a bullfighting scene, was cast in 1994. Within a short time she started receiving recognition locally and at the Missouri State Fair.

With a B.A. on mathematics and chemistry and a M.S. in biochemistry, her sculptures are a blend of mathematically planned action and artistic composition. Former experience as a research biochemist, a math and science teacher, and a cartographer with the U.S. Geological Survey contribute to a drive for accuracy. Authenticity of detail is verified be her own research and technical advice from experts.

Subjects for her sculptures are drawn from a wide variety of experiences and interests. Traveling around the United States as well as to a number of other countries, she has witnessed a variety of life which becomes apparent in her work. Her rural roots, including a family member who worked as a wrangler at a dude ranch and another who worked as a cowboy in the Southwest, have inspired many themes.
